 Consolidation should not be confused with compaction which is a barrier to root growth and water infiltration and in many cases the key cause of poor soil structure leading to run-off and erosion.
This is often caused during harvesting or the use of inappropriate cultivation systems. The principle of minimum passes where ever possible is of major benefit in avoiding compaction.
